Dr. Cunningham's
interpretation of the catalogue description:
Basically, we will be working on understanding plays that are some
of the most significant literary and dramatic works in our culture.
We will attempt to understand the plays as individual plays, as works
in the modes of comedy, tragedy, romance, and satire. We will
look at the chronological of composition, the historical and sociological
events and climates of the time, the political and religious situations
that are a part of the intellectual milieu of the plays themselves.
We will study Shakespearean biography and Shakespeare as the spirit
of an age.
