Programmed Instruction and Computer-Interactive Applications

The recent ABA convention revealed increasing interest in computer-interactive
applications
for use in the instruction of behavior analysis. Anyone wishing to become
involved
in symposia or paper presentations about programmed instruction and computer-
interactive
applications should contact Darrel Bostow at the following address:

Kevin
Murdock and Darrel Bostow are currently preparing computer tutorials
covering
the measurement of human behavior in applied settings. Anyone wishing to
become
"beta" evaluators should contact Bostow at his above address.
Bostow
is currently editing the scanned in copy of B. F. Skinner's CONTINGENCIES OF
REINFORCEMENT
which he hopes can be made available from an internet WWW site.
He is also editing
scanned-in copy of Skinner's BEYOND FREEDOM AND DIGNITY.
(Both of these books
are now out of print.) Negotiations about copyrights will determine
how these
and other texts can become available via the WWW or CD-Rom.
Very shortly, a down-loadable
version of an interactive (Authorware) audio/video
programmed instruction tutorial
about TIMEOUT is scheduled to become available
through the Behavior Analysis Home
Page on the WWW.
Negotiations have begun to commence a behavior analysis masters
program at the
University of South Florida. This may become the first behavior
analysis graduate
program with a significant portion of instruction delivered
via "distance learning."
Within the next few months, Brendan Tompkins
(with Bostow) plans to develop a "cyber-
home" for undergraduates interested
in behavior analysis. Students will be able to register
their names with personal
profiles and interests (possibly including their own linked WWW
pages and e-mail
numbers). Updating will, of course, be required periodically. In this
way,
we can look after our future generations, graduate programs can search for good
students,
and students can connect with each other. If you have any further ideas about
such
an endeavor, contact Bostow at the above address.
A thorough (100 pg.) Walden
Two study guide (by Fernald) and accompanying interactive
matching quizzes (by
Bostow) are now available for use. Contact Bostow at the address
above for details
about purchase and vending through bookstores.
If you have news to share about the use of computers to save the world
with behavior
analysis, do contact us.
Darrel Bostow and his students
have recently "burned" their first ROM disk. It is a 116
frame instructional
program using pictures, video, and audio clips. The program describes
the time
out research done by Bostow and Jon Bailey early in their careers. Bostow and
his
students hope to eventually have this and other programs available for downloading
from
a WWW page. We need more people to tell us about their work. Individuals who
are
creating useful instructional programs and tests for the computer should contact
Bostow
