These instructions will direct you to a couple of other web pages and tell you what to do on those pages. So you may want to either print this page or keep it open in a separate window or tab so that you can refer to these instructions while navigating on the other pages.
In order to download the CyberRat user's guide, your computer must be able to read PDF files. So if your computer doesn't already have a program to do that, you can obtain the free Adobe Reader by clicking on the link and following instructions there.
In order for CyberRat to function on your computer, you'll also need to have QuickTime installed.
Go to the CyberRat Download Page. Scroll down to the section called CyberRat User Guides Download. There are links here to download the brief, "quick start" guide and the full user's guide. Both are PDF documents. Download at least the full user's guide.
You can obtain the CyberRat program, itself, by (1) downloading it, or (2) ordering a CD to be mailed to you. I recommend downloading it.
The section called CyberRat Program Downloads has links to download the program for either the Windows or Mac operating system. Click on the appropriate link. When CyberRat downloads, it comes to your computer as a compressed “package” that has to be installed. When the download is complete, launch the installation package. When installation is complete, there should be a folder called CyberRat on your computer’s main hard drive. If you’re unable to locate this folder after the installation process runs, use your system’s “search” function and search for “CyberRat” to see where it is.
There's also a link in this section to download CyRat.mov, which is a higher resolution version of the video used by CyberRat. Doing this is completely optional; the program will run perfectly well without it. If you decide to do this, there are instructions in this section for what to do with CyRat.mov once it's been downloaded.In order to use CyberRat for the assignments in this course, it must be fully activated, and in order for it to be fully activated, you have to pay for it. Go to the CyberRat Purchase Page, where you have the option of (1) paying online, or (2) paying by mailing a check. I recommend paying online because that way CyberRat will be activated faster. To do this, choose Option 1-A by clicking on the first Buy Now button.
Usually within 24 hours of paying online for CyberRat, you'll receive an email containing an activation number. If you choose to order the CyberRat CD instead of downloading it, the activation number will come with the CD. Go to the CyberRat Activation and Registration page. Scroll to the bottom of the page. Click on CLICK HERE and follow the instructions. You'll enter your activation number, submit a student ID number that will also be used when you log in to the program, and specify your school, course, and teacher.
To run the program, click on the CyberRat application located in the folder that was created at installation. You may want to create a shortcut to the program to make it more convenient. Additional instructions about how to set up and conduct experiments and do all the other things CyberRat can do are in the user's guides.
